Construction Updates and Road Projects

When pipeline construction is likely to disrupt traffic, a public information program is initiated to alert drivers about LOTT's construction plans. A newsletter is periodically produced by staff to keep affected individuals informed about significant upcoming construction activities and planned traffic disruptions. Copies are made available here on the LOTT website, or via email by request. For large projects on major roads, news releases are sent to The Olympian and local radio stations, and electronic signs are used to alert traffic to disruptions ahead.

East Bay Public Plaza Construction Update

The focal point of the East Bay Redevelopment is a public plaza to be located between the Hands On Children's Museum and the LOTT WET Science Center. The plaza is designed to be an attractive meeting space, complete with an interactive water feature and interpretive elements that teach about the interconnectedness of our water resources. The plaza was designed by Robert W. Droll & Associates of Lacey, Washington.

Construction on the plaza began in August 2011 by Berschauer Phillips Construction of Tumwater, Washington. Construction activities in the fall of 2011 include soil testing, removal of contamination, excavation, installation of utilities, and construction of the water feature, along with installation of some of the hardscape surfaces, if weather allows. Activity on the site will continue through winter with construction of the restroom structure and other activities not dependent on the weather. Construction will be completed in the spring and early summer of 2012, with installation of the remaining hardscapes, landscaping, public art, and other interpretive elements. The plaza is expected to open to the public by July 2012.

Primary Sedimentation Basins Construction Update

The primary sedimentation basins are the oldest part of the Budd Inlet Treatment Plant – built over 60 years ago. A major capital improvement project began in September 2011 to construct two new primary sedimentation basins and install odor control facilities, piping, and chemical and electrical control systems to support the basins. Construction activities require significant excavation, up to 25 feet deep, and several extended periods of pile driving. Noise and increased truck traffic related to construction is expected. The project is anticipated to be complete in two years. M.A. Mortenson Company of Bellevue, Washington is the General Contractor/Construction Manager for the project. For more information about project construction, contact Eric Hielema by telephone at (360) 528-5705 or by email.
